Under the new agreement, Germany and the US will now equally pay 16% of NATO's central budget after the US previously contributed 22% (more than any other member).
Twelve countries took part in the founding of NATO: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In 1952, Greece and Turkey became members of the Alliance, joined later by West Germany (in 1955) and Spain (in 1982).
Now, NATO data shows Romania, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Lithuania, France and Norway meeting the target. Trump has taken credit for an overall boost in allied defense spending in recent years, and Stoltenberg has praised the U.S. president for making it a priority.
The U.S. currently pays $116M each year to the World Health Organization (WHO), or about 24% of the entire organization's budget. China pays the second most of any country in the world at $57M, or 12% of the organization's total. The vast majority of countries pay significantly less than the U.S. for the WHO.
Yet new NATO figures published Friday estimate Canada will spend around 1.31 per cent of its GDP on its military this year — the same as last year. That leaves Canada 20th out of NATO's 29 members in terms of GDP spent on defence. Nine NATO members met the two per cent target.
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a global organization that serves many purposes in the world's security. But the cornerstone of NATO is what's called collective defense. It is the basis of Article 5 of NATO's founding treaty and commits members to protect each other during acts of war.
In 1966 due to souring relations between Washington and Paris because of the refusal to integrate France's nuclear deterrent with other North Atlantic powers, or accept any collective form of control over its armed forces, the French president Charles de Gaulle downgraded France's membership in NATO and withdrew France

As a founding member of NATO, Britain publicly presents the alliance as key to its defence strategy. But this public support has not extended to providing the necessary support for arms and equipment for the British military. Still, this means that Britain is the second biggest spender on defence in NATO.
In 2019 the United Kingdom spent approximately 38 billion British pounds on defense, an increase of almost 2 billion pounds when compared with 2017/18. Although defense spending increased between 2005/06 and 2009/10, funding was cut by around 6 billion pounds between 2010 and 2013.
European NATO members have about 3.3 million military personnel on active duty. The United States maintains about 320,000 military personnel in Europe, about ten percent of the European total.
