The 1974 Super Beetle is equipped with a 1,600 cc, 60-horsepower, three-cylinder engine with an external oil cooler. It generates 77 foot-pounds of torque at 2,600 RPM, and has an 83-millimeter bore and a compression ratio of 7.5:1.
The VW Beetle lacks four of these traits – we concur with those who find it beautiful and well-designed, but it was never rare, high powered, racy or expensive. Yet the typical price of collector-quality VW Beetles has gone from a median value of $9,500 in 2002 to a medium value of $15,000 today, according to Martin.
For 1974, the Volkswagen Beetle was available as a 2-door sedan, 2-door Super sedan, and a convertible sedan. Pricing ranged from $2,630 to $3,475. New this year were energy-absorbing bumpers and seatbelt-ignition interlock system. Inside the car, the headrests became smaller.
Available as a standard Beetle, a Super Beetle and a Convertible, the Sun Bug was billed as a car that could turn even a mundane trip to the store into a holiday. Beetle-based Sun Bugs were powered by a 1.6 liter air-cooled flat-four that made 46 horsepower and 72 lb-ft.

The 1973 Volkswagen Super Beetle uses the same 1,600 cc four-cylinder engine found in earlier standard and Super Beetles sold in North America since 1971. The engine sits in the rear of the vehicle, leaving the front compartment free for cargo space. The engine provides a maximum of 5,500 rpm.
The easiest way to distinguish the standard 1973 Volkswagen Beetle (back) from the 1973 Super Beetle (front) is the larger lip on the Super's trunklid.

From its dark origins in 1930s Nazi Germany to the "Summer of Love" in 1967, the VW Beetle is one of the most recognizable cars ever made. In 2019 the final Beetle rolled off the line in Puebla, Mexico — but after eight decades, has it finally hit the end of the road?
If you are looking for a more modern Beetle then it is generally accepted that 2017 was when they were making the best Beetle. This was when they had the most modern technology added to give you the best driving experience.
“How fast can a 1600cc engine go?†Of course, many factors contribute to this. However, it may be possible to hit 80 miles per hour in one. That's not to say the VW 1600 can, but other models and tuned up versions have in the past.
You can get more HP form a nicely tuned 1600 engine compared to a "normal" 1776 engine. Carbs, heads, exhaust, etc is all important too. You can get a 1776 to 100+ HP with nice heads, exhaust, a turbo, etc etc.
The new Volkswagen Beetle Turbo is the most potent version you can currently buy. It's powered by VW's tried and tested 2-litre TSI engine, familiar from Scirocco GTs and Golf GTIs, here producing 197bhp though updated versions see this climb to 207bhp.
History of the 1973 Volkswagen BeetleThe rear engine cooling vents were designed with four stacks of louvers across the tail. The base 1973 Beetle Sedan still cost $1780, but the Sunroof Sedan now cost $2299. The Super Beetle increased to $2459 and the Cabriolet jumped almost $500, to $3050.
The main difference between the VW Beetle and Super Beetle is the front suspension which provides a better driving experience. Furthermore, the Super Beetle is longer which results in more storage space because the spare tire is located at the front of the car.
VW officially announced the end of the Beetle
The Beetle would have been up for a redesign in 2020 should it have stayed in the lineup, but VW has decided to make 2019 the last year for this heritage model.VW's head of research and development Frank Welsch, told Autocar at the Geneva Motor Show this week that "two or three generations is enough now." The executive said that the company's new T-Roc Convertible will eventually replace the Beetle, Golf and Eos cabriolet models in 2020.
