Here we can see that when it comes to AMD vs Intel HEDT CPUs, AMD holds the uncontested lead with 64 cores and 128 threads in its flagship Threadripper 3990X, and the 32- and 24-core Threadripper 3970X and 3960X models cement the overwhelming lead over Intel's chips.

Other companies that say they're using AMD's new processors or offering them to customers include Microsoft, which is previewing the chips in some of its Azure cloud offerings, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Lenovo and Dell.
Because of licensing agreements developed by Intel: Intel, AMD and VIA are the only companies allowed to produce CPUs using the x86 (and x86-64) ISA. Recently Qualcomm have tried to develop ARM chips which work on Windows 10 for low powered laptops and tablets with always on connectivity using LTE.
When their process got stuck at 14nm, their architecture got stuck too. AMD, because they don't have their own foundry, decoupled process and architecture allowing them to quickly deliver iterations of their products while Intel was stuck.

Now, Intel's decided to let one of its internal organs function with slightly less external involvement. Starting later this year, after the launch of its new Haswell chips, the company will stop developing new desktop motherboards.
Nvidia make CPUs, with licensed ARM cores included in their Tegra chips. One difference is that CPUs can handle complex operations, while GPUs can only handle simple operations though at high speed.
In layman's terms, while you CAN play with two CPUs at the same time, there is certainly NO NEED for any PC game to require more than a single computer. Yes, having a dual processor motherboard for gaming can be useful in terms of additional computing power, higher PCIe and greater memory bandwidth.
Basically, having a high clock speed but just one or two cores means your computer will be able to load and interact with a single application quickly. Conversely, having more processor cores, but a slower clock speed means your computer can work with more applications at a time, but each may run a little slower.
You can get motherboards with 2 CPU Sockets but they are mostly mean't for servers. You still could install windows and use a PC with two CPUs but you probably wouldn't need that much performance. There are some server PCs and workstation PCs that utilise two or four Xeon chips.
So a processor with two cores will have four threads. A processor with eight cores will have 16 threads. A processor with 24 cores (yes, those exist), will have 48 threads. Threads are important to the function of your computer because they determine how many tasks your computer can perform at any given time.
Dual-core processors include two CPUs on one die and can, in some cases, double your system's processing power. However, if you have a dual-core CPU, you must ensure that Windows is utilizing both cores to enable the system to run at its optimal speed.
The Core i3 range is entirely dual core, while Core i5 and i7 processors have four cores. It is difficult for an application to take advantage of the multicore system. Having multiple cores means that the computer can work on more than one task at a time more efficiently.
The more cores are available, the more database tasks a system can handle. Dual processor servers can even handle multiple databases on a single machine due to the sheer number of processing power. These servers shine when they serve as the basis for a virtual environment or the backbone of a server cluster.
Today, 4-cores are recommended. While a few do, most games don't utilize more than 4 cores. That is to say, you won't see any significant performance boost with more cores. On the other hand, if you're thinking about the future, you either want 4 super fast cores, or 6 average speed cores.
Although many day-to-day tasks don't require much more than a Dual Core, there are benefits of a Quad Core processor are a little more tangible. Not only is it faster, and more powerful when it comes to highly intensive tasks, the Quad Core processor may also give you more bang for your buck in the long run.
A processor (CPU) is the logic circuitry that responds to and processes the basic instructions that drive a computer. The term processor is used interchangeably with the term central processing unit (CPU), although strictly speaking, the CPU is not the only processor in a computer.
There are five types of general-purpose processors they are, Microcontroller, Microprocessor, Embedded Processor, DSP and Media Processor.

A CPU can have multiple cores. A processor with two cores is called a dual-core processor; with four cores, a quad-core; six cores, hexa-core; eight cores, octa-core. As of 2019, the majority of consumer CPUs feature between two and twelve cores. Workstation and server CPUs may feature as many as 48.
Microsoft Windows, for example, designates its 32-bit versions as "x86" and 64-bit versions as "x64", while installation files of 64-bit Windows versions are required to be placed into a directory called "AMD64".
Dual-core processors have two cores, quad-core processors have four cores, and so on and so forth. The processor, by the way, is the thing that drives the phone. The more power in the processor, the more stuff you can do with your device, and the faster it can do it.
Head to Control Panel > System and Security > System to open it. You can also press Windows+Pause on your keyboard to instantly open this window. Your computer's CPU model and speed are displayed to the right of “Processor” under the System heading.
