Birmingham is divided into ten parliamentary constituencies, each of which elects one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons. The city is divided in to 69 wards, which elect either one or two councillors to be members of the City Council.
Except during the period of the Commonwealth, Warwickshire has two MPs elected by the bloc vote method, under which each voter had two votes.

Erdington is a suburb and ward of Birmingham that is historically part of Warwickshire. It is 5 miles (8 km) northeast of central Birmingham, England and borders Sutton Coldfield. Erdington (ward) was part of the Sutton Coldfield constituency before 1974.

Birmingham is said to be the home of heavy metal with the likes of Black Sabbath (led by Ozzy Osbourne), Judas Priest and lead singer of Led Zeppelin originating from the city. Merging into BirminghamIn 1974, Sutton Coldfield became part of Birmingham when the metropolitan county of the West Midlands was formed. More recently, Sutton Coldfield has undergone changes. Areas of the town centre have been pedestrianised and the Gracechurch Centre has been 'improved'.
Birmingham is home to the world's largest population of Kashmiri expatriates, many having emigrated from Mirpur in the 1960s after being displaced by the building of a dam. Mirpur has been called "Little Birmingham" because of the close family and cultural ties between the two regions.
