Aletsch Glacier: Facts & Figures. During the last ice age, around 18,000 years ago, only the peaks in the region rose above the ice. 11,000 years ago, the glacier extended down into the Rhône Valley. In 1860, the glacier was 3km longer than it is today and its edges were about 200m higher.
All glaciers are located within the Swiss Alps. Most of them are situated in the Pennine and Bernese Alps. The Jungfrau-Aletsch protected area includes the largest glaciers of the Alps. There are approximately 1,800 glaciers in the Swiss Alps.
Alpine glaciers begin high up in the mountains in bowl-shaped hollows called cirques. As the glacier grows, the ice slowly flows out of the cirque and into a valley. When valley glaciers flow out of the mountains, they spread out and join to form a piedmont glacier.

Valleys in hilly country
Water running down from the hillsides often carries soil that spreads out across the valley, making flat land that is good for growing food crops and raising cattle and other animals. Many farms are in valleys that are in hilly land. Many towns are built on the sloping sides of valleys. The Alps are growing just as quickly in height as they are shrinking. This paradoxical result comes from a new study by a group of German and Swiss geoscientists. Due to glaciers and rivers, about exactly the same amount of material is eroded from the slopes of the Alps as is regenerated from the deep Earth's crust.
To get to Langjokull Glacier from Reykjavik, you'll need the help of a super vehicle. The closest point to the glacier you can reach by yourself from Reykjavik is Klaki Base Camp (only in summer) and Husafell center (all year round). Both of the spots have parking lots.
A glacier cave is a cave formed within the ice of a glacier. Glacier caves are often called ice caves, but the latter term is properly used to describe bedrock caves that contain year-round ice.

Ice caves basically form in the same way as limestone caves. The berg or in the case of an ice cave, the ice, dissolves and a cavity or a lumen forms. Ice caves are always formed in glaciers and are carved out when the ice turns into meltwater leaving cavities to form.
