Yes, you will be scared and creeped out, but if you enjoy it then keep going. Horror is addictive. :) Well, it's a horror series, so yes. If you don't want to get scared, avoid RE1 and RE7 because they're the scariest in the series.

No need to play the first one. However, as is true with the whole series, the more titles you've played and the more familiar you are with the story the more you'll understand or catch certain things in game.
Resident Evil 6 is not what you would call a Resident Evil, but it's a good over-the-top action shooter that works pretty well on Switch. This version could've had a better optimization, but it's perfectly playable.
For such a linear experience, Resident Evil 5 does a decent job of making combat bowls feel big; you'll get flanked by undead hordes if you don't pay particular attention to your surroundings, and it's this sense of defencelessness that injects just the teensiest drop of horror into what is ostensibly an action game.
On the whole, Resident Evil is still an extremely effective exercise in survival horror. The portability of the Switch version gives the game the best possible opportunity to win you over in a modern context, but ultimately, Resident Evil simply is what it is.
When did Resident Evil 6 come out?
The quality of the monsters in this game makes up for the quantity. Glasps are freaking disgusting. In my opinion it is the best modern Resident Evil game (which isn't saying much, but still). Revelations 2 is a great step in the right direction for the series.
