In Japanese, sentai (戦隊) is a military unit and may be literally translated as "squadron", "task force", "division (of ships)", "group" or "wing". The terms "regiment" and "flotilla", while sometimes used as translations of sentai, are also used to refer to larger formations.
For any of you not in the know, Power Rangers is not a wholly original show. Power Rangers takes much of its battle footage from a Japanese program called Super Sentai. Every year since its inception they've used footage and even some plotlines from the Japanese program to varying degrees of success.

While the first season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers aired in 1993, the first Super Sentai show debuted in 1975. While the franchise has had its share of highs and lows and certainly isn't as popular as it once was, even now there's a new series airing in Japan, following in the footsteps of dozens that came before.
