It's not a gif. It's a Boomerang. Today, we're announcing Boomerang from Instagram, a new video app that lets you turn everyday moments into something fun and unexpected. Boomerang takes a burst of photos and stitches them together into a high-quality mini video that plays forward and backward.
A Boomerang is a burst of photos that plays back and forth to create a video that continuously replays on a loop. There are two ways to post a Boomerang to Instagram – users can post to Stories or to their Feed directly from the Boomerang app; or they can post to Stories using Instagram's built-in Boomerang function.
It's a Boomerang. ( Instagram) Boomerang works by taking a super short, super fast burst of photos and stitching them together into a mini video that plays forward and backward and forward and backward and—well, you get the idea.
Under Chat Settings, you'll see Theme. Tap this and scroll through a selection of colors and combinations to immediately change the way your messages look. The default theme that you've already been using is a mix of purples and blues that you can always return to.
Hold down the image for a moment. A circle will appear briefly before it says BOOMERANG across the screen, and your picture comes to life. Hit the "+ Your Story" icon, like you would for any other picture or video, and add that new Boomerang you didn't even mean to take.
To access these new effects, take a Boomerang as usual, open the Story camera, swipe over to "Boomerang" on the carousel, then tap the shutter button or hold it down and let go.
Just move a handle where you want the Boomerang to begin or end. The trim feature is available in all modes. To switch to Slow-mo mode, tap the Slow-mo button or swipe left on the row above the timeline. In Slow-mo mode, the Boomerang plays at half-speed.
You can use Slowmo, which allows you to slow down your Boomerang, letting you take in all the details of your clip. The modes are in order of Classic, Slowmo, Echo, and then Duo. And no matter which mode you choose, the option to trim the clip will remain visible at the bottom of your screen.
Hyperlapse offers up a secret menu for users that can only be accessed by tapping four fingers on the screen four times. In Boomerang, the same four-finger tap unlocks even more options, including Capture Frame Rate, which lets you increase the shooting time to 10 seconds from the default one.
Open StoriesYou'll see all the options at the bottom of the screen: Live, Normal, Boomerang, Rewind, Hands-Free. Swipe through til you've selected your Hands-Free destiny.
Tips for Taking an Addictive Boomerang
- Find the fun in the everyday. Sure, backflips and fireworks shows are great material for Boomerangs.
- Stay in the loop. Keep in mind that a Boomerang plays forward, then loops backward and starts over again.
- Plan and practice.
- Get advanced with settings.
- Resolution.

CREATING BOOMERANGS FROM EXISTING VIDEOS ON ANDROIDThe play store has plenty of apps for Android phones to turn a video into a boomerang. From the Play Store, install the app Video Boomerang Converter. After the installation opens the app and clicks on the Convert Existing Video icon.
You can also save your video and upload it to your Instagram Story. Bonus tip: Before capturing the video, you can quadrupole tap the screen with four fingers to reveal a secret menu. From there you can choose your video resolution, frame rate and speeds up to 40x.
Share your timelapse videos on your Instagram feed, and/or as an Instagram Story. You can also throw these videos onto your Facebook Page and Blog.
After you record with the slo-mo camera mode, you can edit which part of your movie plays with the slow motion effect. That means you can have your video play at regular speed, and slow down for the details that you don't want your viewers to miss.
How does the Boomerang app work? The Boomerang app takes bursts of photos and then stitches them together into a HD video loop. The loop starts to play forward but then plays backward, creating a neat, GIF-like video. Boomerang videos do not include audio.
Find and tap the Live Photo you'd like to turn into a GIF. Swipe up on the center of the screen to reveal the animation options. Tap Loop if you'd like to loop the Live Photo as a GIF. You can also choose to "Bounce" it á la the Boomerang app for Instagram.
Right at the top, you'll see “Chat Settings,” and right under that is the “Theme” option. Tap the circle to the right and select an option to change things up! There are both solid colors and gradients to choose from.
Go to your Photos app, select the live photo you want to use, and swipe up (or scroll down, if you're on your computer). You'll see 3 options for your live photo: live, bounce, and loop. To make your live photo a video, you'll need to choose either the loop or bounce option.
Loop Video
- Open the Google Play Store and search the name of the application to install it on your Android device.
- After the installation, run the program on your phone.
- Tap the “Camera” button, then start shooting a video.
- Next, trim the video if it is needed, then hit “√”.
- Once done, hit “√” then “Save”.
Under “Media Library” select “Add”, then select “Video from Camera Roll”. Locate the video on your iOS device. It will have either been saved from an email, or copied through an iTunes sync. Under “Configure Presentation” tap the text that says “Select Video to Loop”
