On New Year's Day in 2020, Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii confirmed that Dragon Quest 12 was in development, and that it had started in 2019.
The "normal" mode is brokenly easy, while the hard mode feels as difficult as any other title in the series. As long as you don't play passively by running from fights, avoiding the forging system, and just brute forcing through battles with no strategy, then it will be fun. The boss fights are tough, but not unfair.
There's more to the story of your predecessor, Erdwin, than you'd think. Dragon Quest 11 is absolutely an overly long game, sleepily pacing out story beats across 80-100 hours, with little in the way of character development given how long you spend listening to characters talk.
I'm only 50 hours into my first playthrough of Dragon Quest XI on the Nintendo Switch, and I can count on one hand how many times I've seen the “Game Over” screen (most of them at that damn Octopus boss fight). The game is incredibly easy, and I love it.
In terms of story length, Act 1 is about ~50-55%; Act 2 is ~30-35%. Act 3 has almost no story (if you rush through it, you can get it all done in like 2-3 hours), though it's heaviest with exposition/explanation.
approximately 45 to 50 hours
between 150 and 200 hours
It's been two years since Dragon Quest XI: Echoes Of An Elusive Age first came to PC, and today its shiny new Definitive Edition arrives. This version of the game allows you to turn on a "retro" mode to play the 3D JRPG as a 16-bit 2D game instead.
In total, it took around eight hours for us to finish Control for the first time. After beating the story, we had also unlocked most of the achievements, the rest coming easy just by completing side quests and the like. It seems feasible that someone could basically 100% Control in less than 15 hours.
DQXI is about 120, give or take depending on whether you are taking your time or going quicker. I've seen places say 80 to 100 hours for story. Those people were moving at a quicker than normal pace for sure. Multiple games have suffered lately from being too big and/or too long.

Persona 5 Royal will take players roughly 60-70 hours if they're just playing through the main story. Of course, that time can go up drastically if players explore mementos, take on side quests, or spend a lot of time exploring. Doing everything will take players upwards of 110 hours.
Persona 5 RoyalThe main story is approximately 103 hours long, and extra content can take that number to over 125 hours.
NieR: Automata is largely defined by and lauded for its unorthodox storytelling. Playing through 2B's story will take you about eleven or so hours to complete (more if you do all the side quests), the conclusion of which leaves the player with a modicum of closure even unanswered questions linger.
DQXI is definitely a good starting point. Not really any cons if you haven't played the series before, pro being it's legit fun and you'll probably want to play other games in the series. Courage and wit have served thee well.
Dragon Quest XI doesn't do much that's new, but it's still one of the best games in the series. It's also the first time since the PS2 that a mainline entry has pushed technical boundaries on a home console. With the Switch version, you get the best of all worlds.
Square Enix announced at TGS that the latest Dragon Quest Game had reached a sales milestone. It was here that the developer/publisher shared that Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age had crossed 6 million copies sold worldwide.
