There are three ways to get there:
- 1 – Cable Cars. The cable cars leave the ground station next to Praia Vermelha and amble up to Morro da Urca.
- 2 – Hike. The hike follows a trail that starts at the base point of Morro da Urca and winds its way to the top of the hill.
- 3 – Mountain Climbing. One for the more adventurous!
The Great Sugar Loaf is often mistaken for an extinct volcano but is in fact a deposit of rock created by heat and pressure inside the earth. It is set apart from the other peaks in the Wicklow Mountains National Park , however it provides views of much of the region.
Sugarloaf has long been a key landmark for sailors and a defensive look-out site to protect against invaders. If you're visiting Rio, the view from the summit of Sugarloaf is a must-see. Today, the two-stage cable-car system operating on the Mountain can transport 1,360 passengers per hour.
Generally speaking, a five mile hike on mostly flat terrain should take you about an hour and forty-five minutes, according to Naismith's rule (which we'll discuss later).
