Steps to Recover Data from a Corrupted or Crashed Hard Drive:
- Download and Install Disk Drill for Windows or Mac OS X.
- Launch Disk Drill recovery software, select the crashed hard disk and click:
- Preview the files you found with Quick or Deep Scan.
- Click Recover button to recover your lost data.
For the RPM specification, platters need to spin faster to increase performance in a hard drive. This results in moving the data bits past the read/write head faster, which results in higher data rates. But today's most common RPM rates, in both laptop and desktop PCs, are between 5400 and 7200 RPM.
PCs with hard drives remain common, but the fastest machines use banks of flash memory called a solid-state drive (SSD) instead. SSDs no longer are exotic. So, while SSDs are ascendant, don't count hard drives out as obsolete.
When your computer stores data on its hard drive, it doesn't just throw magnetized nails into a box, all jumbled up together. The data is stored in a very orderly pattern on each platter. Bits of data are arranged in concentric, circular paths called tracks. Each track is broken up into smaller areas called sectors.
Cost. Neither magnetic hard disks nor optical disk drives are expensive, though optical drives go for a fraction of what a hard disk costs.
In this context, magnetic tapes are now living a second youth. This solution is proven and stable – for decades it has been used for data storage and is considered safe and extremely reliable. In the times of pressing for better hardware parameters, particularly speed, tapes were predicted to vanish quickly.
Optical Storage Devices:
Optical storage devices are flat, round disks that spins around its center. The difference with magnetic storage device is that in optical storage devices LASER light is used to read and write data in disks. Examples are CD, DVD etc.Commonly used devices that use magnetic storage include magnetic tape, floppy disks and hard-disk drives.
There are two types of storage devices used with computers: a primary storage device, such as RAM, and a secondary storage device, such as a hard drive. Secondary storage can be removable, internal, or external. Why is storage needed in a computer?
Optical storage. Optical storage, electronic storage medium that uses low-power laser beams to record and retrieve digital (binary) data. In optical-storage technology, a laser beam encodes digital data onto an optical, or laser, disk in the form of tiny pits arranged in concentric tracks on the disk's surface.
Secondary storage devices are generally separated into three types: magnetic storage devices, such as hard disk drives and tapes. optical storage devices, such as CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs. solid state storage devices, such as solid state drives (SSDs) and USB memory sticks.
Storage devices
| Storage device | Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|
| Magnetic storage: Hard Disc Drive (HDD) | Relatively cheap per unit of storage. Fast access and retrieval times compared to other storage devices. | Can be easily damaged, will slow down and eventually break over time. Slower access than Solid State Drives. |
The surfaces of disks and magnetic tapes are coated with millions of tiny iron particles so that data can be stored on them. The write/read heads of disk drives or tape drives contain electromagnets that generate magnetic fields in the iron on the storage medium as the head passes over the disk or tape.
SSD Disadvantages:
- Price: The biggest disadvantage of a solid state drive is the cost.
- Recovery of Lost Data: The inability to recover old data is one of the biggest disadvantages of a SSD.
- Storage Capacity: Solid state drives are highly expensive and are sold with a hefty price tag unlike conventional HDDs.
A laptop might come with a 128GB or 256GB SSD instead of a 1TB or 2TB hard drive. A 1TB hard drive stores eight times as much as a 128GB SSD, and four times as much as a 256GB SSD. The advantage is that you can access your online files from other devices including desktop PCs, laptops, tablets and smartphones.
If a drive is stored at 25C or operated 40C, expected data retention for a client drive is 105 weeks, or nearly two years. Let the storage temperature creep up to 30C, or 86F, and the drive should still hold data for an entire year. Enterprise SSDs, however, have entirely different characteristics.
Major benefits of SSD over an HDD are access time meaning SSD has access speed of 35 to 100 microseconds which is nearly 100 times faster than a traditional HDD. SSD is more reliable than HDD as it does not have any moving parts. It uses flash memory to store data whereas HDD has moving parts and magnetic platters.
The difference between hard drives and solid state drives is in the technology used to store and retrieve data. HDDs are cheaper and you can get more storage space. SSDs, however, are faster, lighter, more durable, and use less energy. Your needs will dictate which storage drive will work best for you.
If your device includes a solid-state drive (SSD), you probably noticed that as it fills up the performance slows down dramatically. The short answer is yes, solid-state drives are faster than traditional rotating platter hard drives.

DWPD measures how many times a user can rewrite an entire SSD every day throughout its warrantied lifetime. For example, if the DWPD is 1 on a 200GB SSD drive, and the warranty period is five years, then users can rewrite the entire 200GB daily for 5 years before anticipating failure.
How to securely erase an SSD drive
- Step 1: Create the Parted Magic bootable media.
- Step 2: After booting into Parted Magic, go to System Tools, then select Erase Disk.
- Step 3: Select "Internal:Secure Erase command writes zeroes to entire data area" then click Continue.
- Step 4: Select the SSD you want to erase, then click the OK button.
