Taking your bike by train. Travelling by train is probably one of the most popular options for people cycling LEJOG or JOGLE. There's a well served train station 10 miles from Lands End at Penzance, whilst John o'Groats is 16 miles from Wick train station with 3 to 4 trains a day through to Inverness.
If you cycle 100 miles per week in the 12 weeks leading up to the tour > you will be fit enough to complete LEJOG. This 100 miles can be in any configuration that fits your life and anything that you do beyond this, just makes everything that bit more comfortable.
The two furthest points apart on the mainland UK are Land's End (Cornwall, England) and John O'Groats (North East Scotland). Google maps says the distance by road between the two is 837 miles (1,346 km). Travelling by car will take 14 hours.
The route is certainly epic – 64 consecutive days, riding at least 60 miles a day, tracing the entire coastline of Britain and taking in just about every one of its seaside towns. Riders can sign up for the whole shebang, a single day, or anything in between.
The signposts at both Land's End and John O'Groats indicate a distance of 874 miles (1,407 km) to their counterpart, which is often taken as the shortest road distance between the two points. However, Google Map reveals a route with a distance of 866 mile (1.394 km), avoiding all motorways.
The United Kingdom extends about 965 km (600 mi) N-S and about 485 km (300 mi) E-W . Its total boundary length is 12,789 km (7,947 mi), of which 12,429 km (7,723 mi) is coastline.
LEJOG cycle training tips
- Start training at least 8-12 weeks before your ride.
- Vary the intensity - don't just focus on putting the miles in.
- Remember the hills.
- Practice riding with your loaded panniers, including at least one or two long rides.
