The most effective technique is to fish anywhere a light shines upon the water, especially around docks. Shad are attracted to these areas, and walleye follow. Minnows and night-crawlers are best in this situation. Trout fishing can also be had in the lower lake, near Bull Shoals Dam.

Bull Shoals Lake is a water sports paradise. The clean waters attract fishermen, scuba divers, boaters, and swimmers during the long warm-weather season of north central Arkansas. With plenty of room for all, Bull Shoals Lake covers between 50,000 and 70,000 acres, depending upon the lake level.

Hogscald Hollow is located on Beaver Lake, just 3.5 miles from Silver Ridge. The valley has a stunning collection of spring fed streams, waterfalls, and collecting pools. Downstream from this sandy spot the river deepens, creating a nice swimming hole and wading streams.
Lake Ouachita State Park, a dozen miles northwest of Hot Springs, maintains two swimming beaches. The larger one close to the visitor center and marina has sometimes been closed recently because of the high level of the lake and the profusion of droppings from pesky Canada geese.
Why the Dam? The flooding in the White River Valleys between 1915 and 1927 persuaded Congress to initiate the Flood Control Act of 1938 and later the Flood Control Act of 1941. These two acts helped create Bull Shoals and Norfork Lakes.
