The 5952 family of 3M VHB Tapes utilizes modified acrylic adhesive on both sides of a very conformable, adhesive foam core. The combination of strength, conformability and adhesion makes this family one of the most capable and well-rounded 3M VHB Tapes.After application, the bond strength will increase as the adhesive flows onto the surface. At room temperature approximately 50% of ultimate bond strength will be achieved after 20 minutes, 90% after 24 hours and 100% after 72 hours.
The desirable tape application temperature range is 20ºC - 40ºC. There are VHB Tapes with special properties that allow low temperature application. Once properly applied, low temperature holding is generally satisfactory down to -400C.
3M does make an automotive OEM double sided tape line of products, however im sure the home stuff you have will work, might not be as strong however (or hold up to water very well). But no, it will not damage your paint.
The two sides that came with the protective film aren't meant to be exposed to the elements. The center of that (depends on how thick it is) which is exposed can get wet. So it's basically a no and yes answer. I'd say the tape is more susceptible to heat than water.
Under no circumstance use glue, tape, solvent, alcohol or any harsh chemicals on leather, you WILL ruin it.
