For example, if you chose 2 numbers, and you “HIT 1 of your 2 numbers, you win 50 cents, if you “HIT†both of your 2 numbers, you win $10. A 7-spot is six times as easy to hit as an 8-spot and the reward is often more than half of the reward. Still, the odds of hitting a SOLID 7 are close to 41,000-to-1, thus the use of ways to lessen the odds. (Of course, you pay for the privilege by paying for each way).
You figure out the total combinations—combin(80,2) = 3160—and then figure out how many winning combinations there are—combin(20,2) = 190. You then divide the numbers, 190/3160. The order in which the five regular numbers are drawn does not matter. To win a jackpot, the player must match not only the first five numbers drawn(in any order) but also match the "mega number" from the second machine. Some U.S. lotteries also offer a smaller "mega-number" game.
Unfortunately, it's not very much. If you only matched one white number on the Powerball, you did NOT win any money. If you only matched one number and it was the red Powerball Number itself, then you'll win $4.
