Select your pattern swatch, go to the arrow in the right of the Panel and select Swatches Library Menu > Save Swatches. Name your pattern and make sure it's saved under the “Swatches Folder” in an . ai format.

Well if you open your Color palette (Window>Color), you'll most likely find that it's set to grayscale. (like below) Then the most probable reason is that you are using the wrong color scheme for this purpose. Some of the color schemes give different colors on the virtual screen and different colors on the print sheet.
Let's solve this problemIf it isn't showing, just go to Window -> Color or press F6. Click on the Color panel and then click on the 3 lines in the red circle. As you can see here, Greyscale mode is selected. Just select the RGB or CMYK mode and you're ready to go!

1 Answer. Your document might be set up as RGB. Check that via 'File → Document Color Mode' and switch to CMYK if needed. Then update your objects again to use CMYK values.
Select your artwork with the Selection Tool (V) and open the recolor artwork panel by pressing the color wheel icon or by going to Edit/Edit Colors/Recolor Artwork. This tool won't automatically change all colors if your artwork has black or white in it. It doesn't mean that you are stuck with them.
The reason for your problem is likely to be that you're working in the wrong color mode: the grayscale mode. If you want to work with a full range of colors, rather than just grays, then you'll need to be working in either the RGB Mode or the CMYK Color Mode.
