A race night consists of eight races with eight horses per race. The race goers receive a race card on arrival. They place bets on their chosen horse/s and receive tote tickets. I use a computerised tote system which calculates the odds and payouts before each race starts and speeds up the process.
A race night is an event where participants stake money on the outcome of recorded races. The money raised from the event is called “the proceeds”.

The minimum stake is usually £2 for Tote Place bets. Works the same as an each way bet in with other bookmakers, but this time a Win bet and a Place bet are placed together to make the Each Way bet at the Tote. Each way bets are available on races with 5 or more runners and the minimum stake is £2 again.
Collect your winnings by the time windows close up to an hour after the last races, or payouts can be collected subsequently at any of our 55 partner racecourses or by post.
Tote betting or pari-mutuel betting is a system that combines all bets together in a pool. The dividend is calculated by dividing the pool, less the designated commission, by the amount of money invested on the winning selection. Fixed Price betting is where the price offered at the time of bet acceptance is fixed.
The Tote is a pool betting system, which means that all the stake money on a particular type of bet on a particular race gets pooled together and then divided out to the winners after deductions are made. For example, if £5,000 is staked on win bets in the 3.20 at Southwell, then the pool of prize money will be £5,000.
The tote bet, simply, is all the bets placed into a pool on an event or race. Using the example of a four horse race where $320 is in the win pool. For Horse A $320 (total pool) minus 10% ($32 house take) divided by $40 wagered on horse A. 288/40 then = $7.20 which will be the starting win odds for this horse.
The Tote Jackpot is a bet where you have to pick the first 6 winners at a meeting nominated by The Tote. The bet is available every day of the week excluding Saturday. The minimum stake is £1 and multiples are in multiples of 50p.
Place bets are available on the Tote for races with 5 or more runners. If there are 5 to 7 runners then a place result is available if your horse finished 1st or 2nd. If there are 8 or more runners then a place is 1st, 2nd or 3rd. In Handicap races with 8 or more runners then a place is 1st to 4th position.
