Endermen can pick up grass blocks, and drop the blocks they are holding if killed, making it the only way to obtain grass without the use of Silk Touch.
Okay, but what is the average time it takes grass to growAfter about 20 samples of the growth rate in game I calculated an average speed of one growth every 2 minutes 45 seconds.

You cannot carry a Grass Block unless you use the enchantment Silk Touch (currently not available in the Xbox 360 version). This is the only way to grow grass in The Nether or The End since it does not naturally occur there. Uses: Grass Blocks can be used to grow Tall Grass and Flowers when sprinkled with Bone Meal.
For grass to spread, it must have a light level of 9 or brighter directly above it. This includes any opaque block, as well as lava, water, ice, and some non-opaque blocks that light can't pass through, like slabs and stairs. Grass can grow under all other transparent blocks, like glass, fences, torches, or pistons.
Grass seed germinates at different rates, depending on various factors such as the grass species, weather, time of year and soil moisture. Typically, germination takes between five and 10 days. Once germinated, the grass will continue to grow at a rate of about 2/3cm per week.
They are a similar color to grass blocks placed in a desert or savanna biome. They are only 15⁄16 of a block high, therefore items that require a full block like torches and buttons cannot be placed on them. Villagers prefer to use grass paths the most when routing compared to any other block.
If you do get a Silk Touch pick, all you need to do is mine some grass! Once you have the grass blocks, just go to your underground base/house and place it in the middle of your dirt room!
You'll need a silk touch tool to collect podzol, or it'll just turn into dirt, and you can't hoe it into farmland. It doesn't spread, unlike grass or mycelium, and won't turn to dirt if you put a solid block above it.
They grow in the Nether similarly to how grass blocks grow in the Overworld, and it will grow Nether Roots and Fungi on top of it. These blocks come in red (Crimson Nylium) and blue-green (Warped Nylium) variants.
Warped and Crimson nylium should spread to netherrack, but only within their respective biomes. Because endermen tend to pick up nylium blocks, they can ruin the natural landscape of these biomes, usually the warped forest biome.

Green Grass Texture PackIf you want a different green than the one I picked and have some facility with zip-file creation and image editing software, you can find the one texture file it contains and change the triangle of green to a green more to your liking.
Biome edgesDuring the biome edge stage of biome generation, portions of some biomes can be overwritten and replaced by different ones. As such, the latter two biome edges cannot generate modified biome variants, but modified biomes can take over any biome edges within the biome edge generation.
How do I get a silk touch picaxe?
- Place your pick in the table and check the tier 3 enchant. If it's Silk Touch, then level up and take the enchant.
- If it's not Silk Touch, place a trash item, such as a wooden shovel, and use the tier 1 enchant. This will reset all enchants for all items.
You can use the /weather command to change between weather cycles at any time (clear, rain, thunder or snow) for a Minecraft world.
