Frequency Polygons. A frequency polygon is almost identical to a histogram, which is used to compare sets of data or to display a cumulative frequency distribution. It uses a line graph to represent quantitative data. Statistics deals with the collection of data and information for a particular purpose.
A frequency polygon is very similar to a histogram. In fact, they are almost identical except that frequency polygons can be used to compare sets of data or to display a cumulative frequency distribution. In addition, histograms tend to be rectangles while a frequency polygon resembles a line graph.
A frequency polygon is a line graph. The points are often not connected with a smooth line, but with straight line segments. Frequency polygons are used to show the changes over time.
An ogive (oh-jive), sometimes called a cumulative frequency polygon, is a type of frequency polygon that shows cumulative frequencies. In other words, the cumulative percents are added on the graph from left to right. An ogive graph plots cumulative frequency on the y-axis and class boundaries along the x-axis.
Frequency Histograms
A frequency histogram is a graph with vertical columns that represent the frequency of a data point or range of data points occurring in a set of data. ' The height of each bar, labeled on the y-axis, represents how many times the numbers in the range appeared in the data set.To calculate the frequency of a wave, divide the velocity of the wave by the wavelength. Write your answer in Hertz, or Hz, which is the unit for frequency. If you need to calculate the frequency from the time it takes to complete a wave cycle, or T, the frequency will be the inverse of the time, or 1 divided by T.
To create a frequency polygon, start just as for histograms, by choosing a class interval. Then draw an X-axis representing the values of the scores in your data. Mark the middle of each class interval with a tick mark, and label it with the middle value represented by the class.
To make a histogram, follow these steps:
- On the vertical axis, place frequencies. Label this axis "Frequency".
- On the horizontal axis, place the lower value of each interval.
- Draw a bar extending from the lower value of each interval to the lower value of the next interval.
To create the frequency polygon:
- Right-click on the chart, then click on Select Data.
- Click on Add.
- For the Series Values, select the same range that you selected for histogram.
- Click OK, then click OK again.
- Right-click a bar of the second histogram, then click on Change Series Chart Type.
A frequency polygon can be created from the histogram or by calculating the midpoints of the bins from the frequency distribution table. The midpoint of a bin is calculated by adding the upper and lower boundary values of the bin and dividing the sum by 2.
To create a frequency distribution and a histogram, follow these steps:
- Click the Data tab's Data Analysis command button to tell Excel that you want to create a frequency distribution and a histogram.
- When Excel displays the Data Analysis dialog box, select Histogram from the Analysis Tools list and click OK.
A frequency polygon can be created from the histogram or by calculating the midpoints of the bins from the frequency distribution table. The midpoint of a bin is calculated by adding the upper and lower boundary values of the bin and dividing the sum by 2.
Steps to Draw a Frequency Polygon
- Mark all the class marks on the horizontal axis. It is also known as the mid-value of every class.
- Corresponding to each class mark, plot the frequency as given to you.
- Join all the plotted points using a line segment.
- This resulting curve is called the frequency polygon.
A frequency-curve is a smooth curve for which the total area is taken to be unity. It is a limiting form of a histogram or frequency polygon.
During a less than type ogive for the given data. Hence obtain the median weight from the graph - and verify the result by using the formula. Locatae 17.5 on the y-axis. From this point, draw a line parallel to the x-axis cutting the curve at a point.
A frequency polygon is a graph constructed by using lines to join the midpoints of each interval, or bin. The heights of the points represent the frequencies. A frequency polygon can be created from the histogram or by calculating the midpoints of the bins from the frequency distribution table.
