Yes, there are 171 steps here, if you want to enjoy the view of Castle Rock. Along the way, you might even run into your buddy Bigfoot. Make sure to take your time on the steps. The climb might not be appropriate for everyone so consider your abilities before taking that first step.
The Hike: Incline at Castle RockOfficially, these 200 steps are called The Challenge Hill, but the locals call it “the incline,†and rightly so, because it's inspired by the Manitou Incline near Colorado Springs. Because it's just 5 minutes down the road, we've turned this into a regular family workout.
There are no bathrooms at the top (only at the bottom) and the bottom of the trail opens up onto the $5 lot and another bathroom. Follow the signs for the Cog Train and you'll find the incline. The Cog Train has separate parking so they do not share with Incline people.
Challenge Hill is the mini version of the popular Manitou Incline in nearby Manitou Springs. The 200-step incline provides an intense cardio workout as users climb steep grade stairs, gaining 178 feet in elevation, to the top of the hill.
The Barr Trail, a separate path that is more than a century old, leads from Manitou Springs to the summit of Pikes Peak. It can be used to descend from the summit of the Incline and from tie number 1,800. The Incline is measured by the railroad ties for which it is known.
Although it's not a long hike, the elevation gain is 500 feet, making it a steep climb by any standards. From here its 0.5 of a mile of a steep trail then it levels out for another 0.5 of a mile of less steep trail. Castle Rock is a large 100 ft outcropping from immediately east of the saddle.
A 3km (2 hour) relatively steep return walk leads from this site. Moderate to good fitness is required. The path traverses jarrah and marri forest and takes you past the famous balancing rock. The Granite Skywalk has two lookouts, a lower and upper one.
(There is no charge for the Skywalk), There are toilets and plenty of shaded picnic tables. A 2.2km walk up a hill to a platform erected around a granite rock with fantastic 360 degree views of farmland, bush, vineyards, tree plantations, the Stirling Ranges and even to the sea in the distance.
There is a $1 fee to walk to the top of Castle Rock. You need to be ready to climb a lot of steep steps.
