You need to press and hold the “Trip” button on the instrument panel until the red light comes on. Next, press the Trip button a second time and then hold until Reset appears. After which, press the Trip button a third time. Then, the BMW computer is now reset.

How do I reset the inspection light on my BMW?

The readiness monitors will remain until the car has been driven long enough for the computer to evaluate the various system and sensors. The amount of time can vary based on the vehicle. In some cases it can take up to 100 miles for all of the computer monitors to completely reset.
The battery disconnect method will work on most vehicles. Some late model vehicles will not clear trouble codes by disconnecting the battery. On these vehicles trouble codes are stored in the ECM's ROM, and only a scan tool will clear trouble code(s) and turn off the check engine or malfunction indicator lamp (MIL).
Use a Code Scanner
- Connect the scanner to the on-board diagnostic connector (OBD-II) under your steering wheel. Turn your ignition switch to “On.” Turn off all accessories.
- Press the “Read” button on your scan tool to view the engine's error codes.
- Press the “Erase” button on your scanner to clear the error code.
It's called fraudulent concealment and it is illegal. Many states will allow punitive damages. This car dealership should count themselves lucky that you discovered this problem before it caused any personal injuries.
If the MIL (yellow engine icon) turns off abruptly after 20 seconds, then you know the DTCs have been reset by the engine monitoring system and not by a scan tool or by disconnecting the battery.
Turn the automobile on and off thriceYou have to turn on your ignition. Then go over this procedure again twice consecutively before proceeding to drive your car. This should disable the check engine light permanently.
The simplest most straightforward way to get rid of the check engine light is to drive it for a little bit, and the light will turn off by itself. Once you drove your car for a couple of days (e.g., usually three days), the check engine light should be gone.
A check engine light will shut itself off if the condition that caused it is remedied. So, if your converter is marginal, and you did a lot of stop-and-go driving, which creates high demand for the converter, that may have turned on the check engine light.
To make sure the check engine light does not reappear, it's recommended that you drive your car 30 to 100 miles. This enables the vehicle's “Drive Cycle” to reset, as the various sensors need time to recalibrate.
Leaving the battery disconnected for about 15 minutes will ensure the vehicle systems will completely reset when you reconnect the battery. Disconnecting the battery will clear the error codes and reset the check engine light.
How to Reset a Car Computer
- Open up the hood.
- Remove the positive terminal cable from the battery using your pliers or wrench.
- Go to your fuse box in your car, and look at the diagram.
- Keep the car disconnected like this for two to three minutes to clear the computer's memory.
- Insert the fuse back in to the box.
Flip your car's ignition on and off a couple of times without cranking the engine and finish with the key in the on position. Your car will then check for any saved trouble codes. All the lights on the dash should light up until one remains on—usually the “service engine” light.
Common causes of a check engine lightGas cap is loose: Tighten the gas cap. If you've lost it, replace it with a new one. Oxygen sensor is bad: You'll need a new sensor — but identify which one is bad first. Spark plugs may be fouled or failing: Replace the spark plugs.
If you changed the o2 sensor and cleared the code and it came back, then it could possibly be a bad o2 sensor again, maybe the wrong one was changed, maybe you have an issue with your exhaust or catalytic converter. After you complete a repair like that it's best to clear the code with an obd2 reader capable of that.
