AMA (American Medical Association) referencing is a system that allows academic authors to show where another author's work has contributed to or supported a finding or theory within their work. The AMA referencing style was designed by the American Medical Association specifically for use in their publications.
General format for all references:Year of publication;volume(issue):page numbers. Book: Author AA, Author BB, Author CC. Title of Book. Edition number (if beyond first).
AMA Style
- Margins: One inch margins are required around the text.
- Line Spacing: Double-space the main text (single space only within the abstract, notes, titles and headings, block quotes, tables and figures, and references—everything but the main text)
- Font: Use Times New Roman, 12-point font.
When citing a web site in the Reference List, provide as much as possible of the following information:
- Author's name (if available).
- Date of publication or update in parentheses (if available).
- Title or description of document.
- Title of complete work (if relevant), in italics or underlined.
- URL.
One in 13 people has asthma (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2016). Whether you spell it out in text or in a parenthetical citation, it only needs to be done once, with the acronym immediately following in parentheses or brackets.

If no author or creator is provided, start the citation with the title/name of the item you are citing instead. Follow the title/name of the item with the date of publication, and the continue with other citation details. Note: an author/creator won't necessarily be a person's name.
Websites
- author (the person or organisation responsible for the site)
- year (date created or last updated)
- name of sponsor of site (if available)
- accessed day month year (the date you viewed the site)
- URL or Internet address (between pointed brackets). If possible, ensure that the URL is included without a line-break.
MLA 8 Citation for Websites with No AuthorWhen no author is listed, you may omit the author information from the MLA citation for the website and begin, instead, with the title (Handbook 24). “Title of Web Page.” Title of Website, Publisher, Date published in Day Month Year format, URL.
The full description of the source can be found listed alphabetically on the reference list at the end of the paper. Each reference cited in the text must appear on the reference list and each entry on the reference list must be cited in the text of the paper.

AMA Style Guide : In-Text CitationsNumber the citations in the order presented in the paper. Superscript numbers are placed after quotation marks, commas and periods. They are placed before semicolons and colons. + If citing several studies, separate the superscripts by commas.
In the AMA citation style, references are organized in the order they appear in the text, and not alphabetically. When you begin your paper, the first source you quote or cite should be marked with a superscript 1.
The recommended font size is 12, as a rule. According to official AMA style guide, you need to use one-inch margins on all pages, and the pages need to be double-spaced.
