APA Style Capitalization Rules
Capitalize all major words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns) in the title/heading, including the second part of hyphenated major words (e.g., Self-Report not Self-report) Capitalize all words of four letters or more. How to Turn off Autocorrect on Android
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap System > Languages & input > Virtual keyboard.
- You'll see a list of all installed keyboards, including default installations.
- Tap Text correction.
- Scroll down to the Corrections section and tap Auto-correction to toggle it off.
- That's it!
The most common errors I see are with short words that are not conjunctions, articles, or prepositions. Words such as one, it, its, it's, him, and own should all be capitalized no matter where they appear in a title.
The rules are fairly standard for title case:
- Capitalize the first and the last word.
- Capitalize nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, and subordinate conjunctions.
- Lowercase articles (a, an, the), coordinating conjunctions, and prepositions.
- Lowercase the 'to' in an infinitive (I want to play guitar).
The Caps Lock key is a toggle key that allows you to switch the letters on your keyboard from lowercase to uppercase. For example, if you press the Caps Lock key enable Caps Lock, every letter you type on the keyboard will be automatically capitalized until you press it again to disable it.
If the text really has been typed using Caps Lock, then you can use Shift+F3 to change case; if you don't get the desired case by repeatedly pressing Shift+F3 (which cycles through three choices that vary depending on the text selected), use the Change Case button in the Font group of the Home tab.
Capitalize sentences automatically
- Choose Pages > Preferences (from the Pages menu at the top of your screen).

When you begin to type a sentence within a shape or text box, if you insert a space, a carriage return, a period, or a semicolon, Microsoft Office Visio automatically capitalizes the first letter of the first word in the sentence (or line).
On the File sidebar, click the “Options” command. In the Word Options window, select the “Proofing” category on the left. On the right, click the “AutoCorrect Options” button. On the “AutoCorrect” tab of the AutoCorrect Options window, you'll see some different capitalization settings towards the top of the tab.
For example, you could copy and paste text from Excel to Microsoft Word and use the shortcut key Shift+F3 to change text between uppercase, lowercase, and proper case. Use our text tool to convert any text from uppercase to lowercase.
To capitalize the first letter of a sentence and leave all other letters as lowercase, click Sentence case. To exclude capital letters from your text, click lowercase. To capitalize all of the letters, click UPPERCASE.

Proper case is any text that is written with each of the first letters of every word being capitalized. For example, "This Is An Example Of Proper Case." is an example of sentence in proper case. Tip. Proper case should not be confused with Title case, which is most of the words being capitalized.
