In theory, ARC is supposed to let you have one connection between your TV and whatever you use to create sound: a receiver or a sound bar . You send video to the TV with an HDMI cable, and that same HDMI cable sends audio from the TV back down the same cable. No extra cables needed (i.e. an optical cable).
How to activate the Audio Return Channel (ARC) feature
- Press the Home or Menu button on the TV remote.
- Select Settings or Setup.
- Select HDMI.
- Select Control for HDMI.
- Select ON.
How To Connecting Soundbar to TV without Optical Cable
- Plug in one end of the HDMI cable to the HDMI OUT jack.
- Now, connect the remaining end of the HDMI cable to the ARC or HDMI IN jack.
- Turn on the soundbar by pressing the power button or use the remote.
- Then, click the source button on the soundbar.
- When you connect an external device to TV (without ARC) and Sound Bar, connect the HDMI cable (sold separately) from the external device to the TV. Then, connect the external device to the Sound bar using an optical cord (sold separately).
- If you want to connect to just the TV, then the HDMI connection is unnecessary.

The biggest difference is that HDMI can pass higher-resolution audio, including the formats found on Blu-ray: Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio. These formats can't get transmitted across optical.
