Connect the Tascam to a computer using the USB cable. Use the – button to select 'Storage' and press enter (>). The computer will recognise the Tascam just like a digital camera or memory stick. The sound files are in the Music folder and you can either copy and paste or drag and drop them onto the computer.

It would work with a 1/8" plug into the DR-05's headphone/line out jack while you have the DR-05 in recording or recording stand by. The other end of that into the computer's analog Line In jack - Blue is the standard colour for that jack. The DR-05 won't act as a real time USB mic though.
To power on your DR-05 handheld recorder, make sure you hold down the power button for a couple of seconds. Also make sure the Hold switch is not engaged. This will prevent the DR-05 from powering on.

The higher-quality preamps in the Zoom H4n Pro are a significant advantage over the Tascam DR-40X, even if when you're not using dynamic mics.
All in all, then, the DR-40X is a great, versatile recorder for the money. Sure, a couple of things could be improved, such as that inability to capture a mono recording from a single in-built mic, but there's nothing that will bother 99 percent of prospective users. Recommended.

Format SD Cards on a TASCAM DR-40X
