There are two different Apple TV 3rd Gen models and a single Apple TV 4th Gen model.

The 4th generation model uses a new operating system, tvOS, with an app store, allowing downloads of third-party apps for video, audio, games and other content. The 4th generation includes a 64-bit Apple A8 processor, and adds support for Dolby Digital Plus audio.

The final Apple TV 3rd Gen model (A1469) has a single core 28 nm Apple A5 processor (S5L8947), 512 MB of RAM, and 8 GB of flash storage. The Apple TV 4th Gen model has a much faster dual core20 nm Apple A8 processor (APL1011), 2 GB of RAM, and 32 GB or 64 GB of flash storage.

Unlike with the newer models, users cannot add their own apps to the 3rd, 2nd, or 1st generation Apple TV models (except in one case, as we'll see). That's because the 3rd generation Apple TV and earlier models don't have an App Store for third-party apps.Update Apple TV (3rd generation)

Apple has announced today it will drop iTunes support for some older devices from May 25. This includes the first-generation Apple TV, and also any PC running Windows XP or Vista. Apple says that the original Apple TV is an “obsolete Apple product” and will not be updated to support security changes.
Currently, Apple is still selling refurbished models of the third-gen Apple TV for $59, but supply of refurb devices is always incredibly limited, so they probably won't be there for long. After the refurbished models disappear, Apple will seemingly have stopped sales of the third-gen Apple TV all together.
