Brussels or Amsterdam: short answer
Amsterdam is more of a tourist haven than Brussels. It's lively, tolerant, entertaining, and you can see great sights in a few days. English is extensively spoken so communication won't be so much trouble. Brussels is a more laid-back, easy-going European city.Train tickets from Brussels to Amsterdam-Centraal start at €25 one-way for a Standard Class ticket if you book in Advance, however, if you're booking last-minute tickets on the day, the average price is around €58.15.
Brussels is not a particularly expensive city, so if you organize your trip ahead of time you will manage to spend very little compared to other European capitals.
Also, Bruges is beautiful, but it is a small city, and you can pretty much see it in a day. If it's your first trip to Europe I would visit two of London, Paris, Berlin, or Rome rather than Belgium, but Belgium is worth seeing if you've already been to some of the major Western European cities.
There are 2 high-speed Thalys trains departing from Brussels-Midi train station every morning. Thalys trains take approximately 1:50 h to travel from Brussels to Amsterdam. SNCB Intercity trains depart from Brussels 6 times every morning and take approximately 3:00 hours to arrive at Amsterdam-Centraal station.
How Long To Visit Brussels: 1-2 Days. You can see the highlights of Brussels in one or two days… and honestly, I wouldn't spend more than two days here. Most travelers agree that you should spend more time visiting the smaller towns like Ghent, Bruges, and Antwerp.
Brussels is generally a safe place to visit. Avoid stations like Brussels Gare du Midi/Zuid Station (the Eurostar Terminal), as well as Gare du Nord and Schuman; petty criminals operate at these places in particular.
About this journey The average travel time between Brussels and Amsterdam is 2h45 minutes. The quickest route is 1h50 minutes. The first train leaving Brussels is at 05:52, the last at 21:52. There is an average of 36 trains a day between Brussels and Amsterdam, leaving approximately every 20 minutes.
