As I write this, there have been 29 different versions of Excel, stretching from 1985 to the present day, on three different operating systems. Each version of Excel has been significantly different to the last, and the Mac and Windows versions are still very different today.
Set Excel's default format to .xls
- Open Excel 2016, click on File and select Options.
- Click on Save on the left and in the Save files in this format drop down box, select Excel 97-2003 workbook.
When you are working on an Excel file, Excel saves all previous autosaved files under Manage Workbook. At any time, you can go back to a previous version of your Excel file. Note: Excel deletes all previous autosaved files when you close the Excel file.

- Click File > Info > Check for Issues.
- Choose Check Compatibility.
- To check for compatibility automatically from now on, check the Check compatibility when saving this workbook box. Tip: You can also specify the versions of Excel that you want to include when you check for compatibility.

- Tick File name extensions under Show/Hide.
- Go to the folder where you Excel file is stored.

- Rename ". XLSX" to ". XLS".

How to Update a Document and Leave Compatibility Mode. To get a document out of Compatibility Mode, open it in the appropriate Office application and click File > Info > Convert. This will convert the older document to a modern type of Office document.

One of the main developments in Excel 2007 and later versions of Excel is that Excel now allows more columns and rows. Therefore, the ability of recent versions of Excel to handle 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns of data is a great advantage for some users.Click File, and then click Options.
