Council tax is a tax on domestic property collected by your local council. The council use it to pay for local services such as schools, rubbish collection, roads and street lighting. In Scotland it also includes a charge for water and sewerage.
Council Tax is an annual fee that your local council charges you for the local services it provides, like rubbish collection and libraries. Normally you pay it in 10 monthly instalments, followed by two months of not making any payments. How much Council Tax you pay depends on: your personal circumstances.
To find out your property's council tax band, pay your bill, or apply for a discount or exemption, go to mygov. scot for more information. Council Tax is a local tax that contributes more than £2 billion towards the funding of local public services annually.
You can usually pay your Council Tax online. You can also use 'Paypoint', 'Payzone' or 'Quickcards' for cash payments at post offices, banks, newsagents and convenience stores. Check your bill to find out which other payment methods you can use.
Council Tax is normally payable in 10 monthly instalments (minimum £5) due on the first of each month from April to January, with extra payment dates available if you pay by direct debit. You can also pay in full in a single payment.
How often can I make Direct Debit payments? If you have a water meter, you can choose to pay quarterly (every 3 months) or monthly. If you don't have a water meter, you can choose to pay annually, half-yearly or monthly, over 8, 10 or 12 months.
You are required to be studying at least 21 hours per week in order to qualify for exemption (>63 credits). You will need to get a paper exemption form from your local authority and take it to Glasgow International College for completion.
If you are a student living in a registered Halls of Residence, you will not have to register for Council Tax and will automatically be exempt. If you move out of a Halls of Residence into a property elsewhere in Glasgow you will need to complete the application form to collect your details.
Council Tax valuations are based on the value of properties that aren't used for business purposes. The purchase price discounts applied to these properties aren't taken into account when setting the band. The VOA doesn't use property price indexes for information or valuations.
Your property is 'exempt' from council tax if it's only occupied by full-time university or college students. Student halls of residence are automatically exempt. If your property isn't exempt, some people, including full-time students, are 'disregarded'.
