On a mixer or a preamp, the gain is the first control that affects the raw microphone signal. It functions to boost the signal to a strong enough level to allow the rest of the controls to have an effect. On a guitar amp, the main function of the gain is to create distortion.
Place the microphone so that it is under your mouth, pointing up, and with it's strongest rejection area aimed at the keyboard. Also make sure that it is relatively close to your mouth. The closer the mic is positioned, the more unwanted outside sounds will be rejected.
Recording
- Ensure the mic is plugged into the computer, and navigate to Go > Applications from the top menu bar.
- Click the mic input drop-down and select “Blue Yeti.” If it isn't an option, quit Audacity by navigating to Audacity > Quit Audacity and launch the program again.
- Click the channels drop-down.
Right-click the Speakers icon in the bottom left of your Windows 10 display. Click on Sounds. Select the Recording tab. Find your Blue Yeti microphone, right-click it, and select Set as Default Device.
Also, a common issue that might lead to that "muffled" sound is that you might be speaking into the microphone wrong. Don't speak into the top of the mic, speak into the front of it. The "front" is the side that the BLUE logo is on, just in case you had it backwards.

Like all microphones, USB mics come in a variety of formats.
