The MG10XU from Yamaha is a compact ten-input mixer with built-in effects for performances, lectures, recordings, and similar applications. The mixer features four mic/line combo inputs with D-PRE mic preamps as well as six 1/4" line inputs with stereo level controls.
Choose the output as the External Mixer and then proceed to select the right sound card. Attach two cables to the output of your sound card and connect them to the two channels on the audio mixer. Once all is set up, the Virtual DJ will detect the attached external mixer and apply the appropriate sound settings to it.
How to Connect a Laptop to a DJ System
- Connect one end of the 1/8 inch audio cable to your audio out jack (headphone jack) on your laptop.
- Connect the other end to the audio in jack on your mixing board. If the mixing board has two audio in jacks per audio channel, connect a 1/8 inch (3.5mm) cable to the Y-splitter.
To accomplish this, you need to connect the audio input of your computer to the audio output of your stereo receiver. We recommend a 3.5mm mini phone plug to Rca jack adapter with a RCA jack stereo cable which plugs into the "line" or "mic" input of your computer's sound card.

Plug one end into the line-out (or headphone) jack on your PC, and the other end into the line-in (or microphone) jack. You'll stop hearing the sound your computer produces, but you can use any audio-recording program to record the “line in” or “microphone” input.
(1) Turn on the STEREO (master) channel switch. (2) Raise the STEREO (master) fader to "0". (3) Turn on the ON switch for channel 1. (4) Turn the GAIN knob to adjust the volume up to the appropriate amount, until the SIG (signal) lamp next to the fader lights up.
Computer Settings (Mac)
- Select [Applications] -> [Utilities], and then double-click [Audio MIDI Setup].
- Select [MG-XU] from the list on the left side of the [Audio Devices] window.
- Control-click [MG-XU] in the list, and select [Use this device for sound output].
Each channel on your mixer has a column of knobs that control the treble, mid, and bass levels for your channel. The treble knob controls the high frequencies, the bass knob adjusts the lowest frequencies, and the mid knob changes everything in between.
You can plug a guitar or bass into your mixer inputs and it will work (make sure the 48v phantom power is OFF!) Guitarists have been plugging their guitars "straight in" almost since the beginning of time. Phantom power shouldn't an issue as you will most likely be plugging into a 1/4" direct in.
