You can view the status of the Open VMware Tools service by entering vmtools-service status at the command line. admin@informacast:~$ vmtools-service status vmtoolsd is enabled vmtoolsd is running.
Open-VM tools (OVT) is an open source implementation of VMware tools. The same as VMware tools, OVT is suite of virtualization utilities which improves the performance, functionality, administration and management of virtual machines (VMs) running within VMware vSphere environment.

Open the terminal application or log in to the remote server using ssh (e.g. ssh user@sever-name ) Run command apt list --installed to list all installed packages on Ubuntu. To display a list of packages satisfying certain criteria such as show matching apache2 packages, run apt list apache.
Procedure. Select the menu command to mount the VMware Tools virtual disc on the guest operating system. Right-click the virtual machine and select All vCenter Actions > Guest OS > Install/Upgrade VMware Tools.
Install VMware Tools on RHEL7
- Mount the CD image of VMware tools in the guest OS.
- Copy the VMware tools archive from the mounted CD to local partition.
- Extract the content.
- Ensure open-vm-tools is uninstalled and dependency packages exist on the guest OS.
- Install VMware tools.
To install VMware Tools, follow this procedure:
- Start the virtual machine.
- On the menu of the VMware console window, choose Player→Manage→Install VMware Tools. The dialog box shown here appears.
- Click Download and Install.
- Follow the instructions in the Setup program to install the VMware tools.
The command “uname -r” shows the version of the Linux kernel that you're currently using. You'll now see which Linux kernel you're using. In the above example, the Linux kernel is 5.4.
VMware Tools is a suite of utilities that enhances the performance of the virtual machines guest operating system and improves management of the virtual machine. Without VMware Tools installed in your guest operating system, guest performance lacks important functionality.
VMware Workstation runs on standard x86-based hardware with 64-bit Intel and AMD processors, and on 64-bit Windows or Linux host operating systems.
To work around this issue, you can manually start, stop, or restart VMware Tools with the commands:
- /etc/vmware-tools/services.sh start.
- /etc/vmware-tools/services.sh stop.
- /etc/vmware-tools/services.sh restart.
To install VMware Tools in Ubuntu follow the steps below:
- Open a Terminal window.
- In the Terminal, run this command to navigate to the vmware-tools-distrib folder:
- Run this command to install VMware Tools:
- Enter your Ubuntu password.
- Restart the Ubuntu virtual machine after the VMware Tools installation completes.
Procedure
- Ensure that the package index is updated: sudo apt-get update.
- If the VM has a GUI (X11, and so on), install or upgrade open-vm-tools-desktop: sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools-desktop.
- Otherwise, use the command to install open-vm-tools: sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools.
Procedure
- Start the vSphere Web Client and log in to the vCenter Server.
- Select the virtual machines.
- Power on the virtual machines to upgrade.
- Right-click your selections.
- Select Guest OS > Install/Upgrade VMware Tools and click OK.
- Select Interactive Upgrade or Automatic Upgrade and click Upgrade.
To open the VMware Tools control panel, double-click the VMware Tools icon in the system tray. If the VMware Tools icon does not appear in the system tray, go to Start > Control Panel. Locate the VMware Tools icon and double-click it.
To install VMware Tools in a Linux guest operating system using Compiler:
- Ensure that your Linux virtual machine is powered on.
- If you are running a GUI interface, open a command shell.
- Right Click VM in the virtual machine menu, then click Guest > Install/Upgrade VMware Tools.
- Click OK.
- To create a mount point, run:
Suse Linux install vmware tools
- Install required software. Login to guest oses using SSH or Vmware server console.
- Start VMWARE Tools installation. You need to start VMware tools installation from Vmware server console or Vmware Workstation VM menu.
- Mount the VMware Tools virtual CD.
- Install the VMware Tools RPM.
- Configure Vmware tools.
To uninstall VMware Tools in a Linux guest operating system:
- Open a terminal window.
- Switch to the root user by running the command: su - root.
- Run the VMware Tools uninstaller script: /usr/bin/vmware-uninstall-tools.pl.
- Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the uninstall.
- Reboot the virtual machine.
To uninstall VMware Tools from your virtual machine:
- Power on the virtual machine.
- Navigate to:
- In Fusion, Virtual Machine > Install VMware Tools.
- In the Windows virtual machine, click Start > Run, type cmd, and click OK.
- In the command prompt, enter D:.
- Run this command:
- For 32 bit guest operating systems: setup.exe /c.
