The sensor works best when it is positioned somewhere between 2 feet (0.6 m) and 6 feet (1.8 m) off the floor. Ideally, the sensor should be within 6 inches (15 cm) above or below your TV.The microphone is inside of the stand of the Kinect, and the stand is not able to be taken apart.

Connect your headphones to your TV and use kinect to speak in chat. Not if you're using the headset adapter. If you're using some other method to connect your headset it'll work.
The echo is usually caused when the kinect picks up the noise from the TV, especially if you have the chat coming through your speakers. The best way to get rid of that is to use the headset to chat. No matter how you set your kinect up there will always be ambient noise from your television.
The Kinect runs a calibration for speaker levels, etc. So yes, having the Kinect in front of the speaker will most likely interfere with voice commands. Try moving it elsewhere if possible, but if you can't, try using a headset for audio.
