Libby is a fast and attractive digital browsing experience. Libby is great if you just want to download a book to your Android or iOS phone or tablet. OverDrive is the “classic” app, and is compatible with more devices, including Kindle Fire, Macs, PCs, and Windows mobile devices.
Sending Libby Books to Kindle
- Go to your Shelf.
- Tap Manage Loan, then Send to Device.
- Tap select your device, then Kindle.
- Tap Send to Kindle.
- You'll be taken to Amazon's website to finish getting the book.
- Tap Close in the top-right corner to go back to the app.
To download and install the audio file:
- Download Audio file for Kindle Paperwhite (7th Generation)
- Turn on your Kindle and plug it into your computer using the USB cable.
- Drag and drop the file from your computer into the Kindle drive.
- Monitor the transfer to ensure the file transfers successfully.
You can borrow Kindle books from your local library's website and, with the click of a button, have them delivered to your Kindle device or free reading app. Click on "Get for Kindle" and then sign in to your Amazon.com account to have the book delivered to your Kindle device or reading app.
From your Loans, you can: Tap Read With to choose where you'd like to read the book (Kindle or Libby), then finish sending to Kindle (U.S. libraries only) or start reading in Libby. Tap Open Audiobook or Open Magazine to start reading or listening to that title.
Share eligible Kindle books for up to 14 days with your friends or family. Select the Actions button then select Loan this title on your eligible title. Enter the recipient's personal email address and optional message then select Send.
The trick is super simple. Before OverDrive reaches back through the ether to reclaim their content, throw your device into airplane mode. This works for any ereader, tablet, or smartphone.
In the OverDrive app
- Click or tap the icon in the top-right corner to open the Settings menu.
- Select eBook, then enable Read in Kindle (U.S. only).
Kindle is not compatible with the Libby App, but you may go directly through Overdrive to borrow books. You can search only for books that will be compatible with your kindle. When you find a book that you would like to borrow follow the steps to borrow it, and then select the option "Read on a Kindle".
The Kobo features/UI are more easily customizable (in fact, you can't really do much at all to change those in Kindle) but that's a minor issue. You can't do that with Kindle. There are workarounds for each with Kindle, but they're cumbersome to do. If you want to read PDF's, again Kobo is a better solution.
Kobo and Sony e-readers work with library ebooks in Canada while most Kindle models don't support the open standard (EPUB) format used by libraries. However the Kindle Fire is the exception, you can use it to borrow books from Canadian libraries.
You can buy a hardware Kindle device, but you can't buy any ebooks from Amazon.ca or download ebooks to your Kindle from your local library1. You'll need to use a Mac or Windows computer to download the books and then a USB cable to sync them to your Kindle.

From your library's website, you can have the e-book delivered wirelessly to your Kindle through Wi-Fi. Note that some publishers allow books to be transferred to your Kindle Paperwhite only by using the USB cable. These books also cannot be read on other devices such as an iPhone or a PC (using the Kindle app).
Go to the website of your local public library and search for "Kindle books" or "eBooks." At checkout, sign in to your Amazon account and select the device to which you want to send the book. Connect your device to Wi-Fi and download to the title from the Archived Items or Cloud.
Once you're on the Amazon website, click “Kindle” then “Manage my Kindle” in the top navigation bar of the Kindle section. Scroll down the page to see a list of all the books you've ever bought and downloaded for your Kindle. To re-download a book, click the tick-box next to it to open a drop-down menu.
