It depends on how much you use it. We go through about two to three bottles per day, so the cartridge lasts about 2 1/2 to three weeks.
The thing I don't like is that the small SodaStream tank refills cost about $15, each one making roughly 60 liters of carbonated water. Technically, you're really paying for 410 grams of CO2, part of the very air you've been breathing for free all of your life.
Does Costco do SodaStream refills or exchanges? No. The soda stream website seem to indicate they did.

You can save a significant portion of the costs of refilling your SodaStream machine by refilling your CO2 tanks at a homebrew store that provides cheap and food-grade CO2. How do I know if the carbonator is empty?
- When you press the carbonating button you will not see any gas going into your bottle of water.
- Even after repeated presses you don't reach the 'buzzing' sound.
- The carbonating button may stay down.
- The carbonator splutters, showing you have run out of CO2.

Put simply, SodaStream is cheaper than buying soda or sparkling water only if you drink a lot of either type of beverage and if you pay attention to the lifetime costs associated with the machine.
The bottom lineNo evidence suggests that carbonated or sparkling water is bad for you. It's not that harmful to dental health, and it seems to have no effect on bone health. Interestingly, a carbonated drink may even enhance digestion by improving swallowing ability and reducing constipation.
To put it simply, SodaStream really isn't cost-effective unless you drink a lot of soda or you're given a SodaStream unit as a gift. If you drink a lot of soda, you're likely setting yourself up for expensive health care costs down the road, so it's still not cheap. My suggestion: don't buy one for frugality's sake.
The SodaStream syrups have way less sugar and calories than a regular can, so it's a good place to at least start cutting back. If you love a good DIY concoction and want to stop buying cases of LaCroix every week, SodaStream might be a good option for cutting down.
