As we see in the series, both Ragnar and Ecbert love Athelstan. Though Ragnar was betrayed by Ecbert but in the end all he wanted was to be with someone who can understand him and not judge him for what he is doing.
While Norse sources claim that Ragnar's sons tortured Ælla to death by the method of the blood eagle, Anglo-Saxon accounts maintain that he died in battle at York on 21 March 867.
In exchange for this, King Ecbert requests that he choose his own death, thereby stealing the satisfaction of his death from the avenging brothers. Edmund is killed by Hvitserk and after having left lands to Ragnar's sons, Ecbert commits suicide in his bath once that Ragnar's sons have accepted the choice of his death.
Nevertheless, Ecbert is considered a great king. He is just and fair to his subjects. He listens to what Athelstan has to say, despite him being a traitor to both England and his faith. Under his reign, Wessex grows powerful, incorporating Mercia and Northumbria under Wessex rule.
Did King Egbert really kill himself?
Ælle is then executed by Bjorn by Blood Eagle, much to the pleasure of his brothers, and his corpse is hung at the pit where Ragnar was executed.
The sons of Ragnar bring the Great Heathen Army over to England, and Ecbert chooses to die by suicide.
Yep, Floki didn't kill him. King Horik tells Floki that he betrayed the Gods but the tricky Viking argues.
While initially going to England to raid, Lagertha stays in Wessex for a time with Athelstan (George Blagden) to help settle the lands King Ecbert (Linus Roache) of Wessex granted them. During this time, she develops a relationship with the king and it seems she is happy with him.
The basic goal of Ragnar's death was to set up the destruction of both King Ecbert and King Ælle. He tricked Ecbert into believing this crime was forgiven so that Ecbert would hand him over to Ælle for execution and let Ivar go free, but in fact told Ivar to take revenge on both Ælle and Ecbert.
He wanted to kill Ecbert, but he hadn't any army, neither any support from his furious sons. But Ragnar decided to go forward with his plans with whatever he had. He recruited a group of old men, by giving too much bribe, Even though he knew that it wasn't enough to touch the hair of Ecbert, he sailed to England.
Ragnar Lodbrok
