People use the term "speed trap" to describe various scenarios. But still, there's usually nothing illegal about the use of speed traps. Regardless of drivers' suspicions, local governments justify these reduced-speed zones as necessary to ensure public safety.
To be certified, they have to accurately estimate within 5 mph the speed of multiple cars during a test. To use radar or Lidar for ticketing on non-highway roads, there also must be an up-to-date traffic and engineering survey for that road on file.
Unfortunately, a speed trap, in its colloquial use, is legal. California Vehicle Code (CVC) 40801 does prohibit using unjustified speed traps. So, while a police officer's use of hiding tactics to catch individual's speeding is not illegal, the use of unjustified speed traps is.

Do speed cameras always flash? Not all speed cameras give off a visible flash – front-facing Truvelo Combi cameras, for example, use a filter to prevent their flash from dazzling drivers. If a camera is operating in good light conditions, the flash may not necessarily go off, either.
A speed trap exists wherever traffic enforcement is focused on extracting revenue from drivers instead of improving safety, made possible by speed limits posted below the prevailing flow of traffic.
Using Speed Trap Alert Apps
- Always launch the app while you're parked, before you start driving.

- Never interact with the app while the car is in motion.
- Never use a police speed trap alert app as an excuse to break the speed limit intentionally.

Unlike the flashing roadside signs encouraging drivers to slow down, they typically don't display a driver's speed in real time.
Active speed monitors are permanent devices to keep drivers aware of their speeds and the need to slow down near schools. They are typically mounted on a speed limit sign and visually display drivers' real-time speeds as they pass. Drivers see how fast they are actually driving compared to the posted speed limit.
Typically, officers do not issue tickets based on the speed on the display unit. Instead, they use certified radar equipment if they are monitoring speed at the location.
Drivers should slow down or stop so they can yield the right-of-way to vehicles on the other road. If a driver sees this sign facing them, they are driving the wrong way on a one-way street, and directly opposing the flow of traffic.
You should receive your Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) and a Section 172 notice inside of 14 days of your car being caught speeding. In short, yes, police officers are allowed to hide to catch speeders using a radar gun. They can even hide out in a private driveway too as long as they've been granted permission; though even if they weren't granted that permission, the ticket stands. Even so these traffic tickets can still be fought and dismissed.

In general, a police speed trap is any technique used by police to catch speeders with the primary intent of raising revenue through issuing tickets. When police enforce speed limits to ensure safety, it is not a speed trap.
Speed traps are designated with a small camera icon and shown on the visible area of the map. AndroidPolice's source also reports that Google Maps provides an audio warning for drivers when they are approaching a speed trap.
Can an officer measure my speed while he is moving? Yes, moving radar can clock other vehicles speeds while the officer's vehicle is moving both going in the same direction or even in opposing directions. The radar guns internal computer then computes these two droppler signals displaying the target vehicles speed.
While Google Maps has the look of a more traditional app with all the on-screen information that provides, Waze takes a much simpler approach with fewer details and a cartoony design. That difference comes from the fact these two apps are designed for totally different things.
How to Show the Speed Limit on Google Maps
- Open Google Maps on your device, press your profile icon at the top-right corner, then Settings.
- Tap Navigation settings, scroll down to “Driving options,” then switch the slider to “On” (so that it's blue).
On the right-hand side of your navigation screen, look for an speech bubble icon with a plus sign inside. Tap on the speech bubble icon and you'll be taken to a section where you can make a report. Choose the speed trap option to make your report (accident and slow-down are also available).
Users around the world will be able to report where police officers are hiding in the app, and that will then show to other users on the route.
