From late May to October traffic control is in place 24 hours a day. Vehicles will only be granted access to Moraine Lake Road if parking is available. If the lot is full you will be turned away at the beginning of the road.
There is no “free camping” in Banff, Yoho & Jasper National Parks, like we have on BLM Land. You are only allowed to stay in designated sites, and I wouldn't recommend trying to sneak around and sleep in a trailhead parking lot overnight. These lots are patrolled, and they do make people move.
Visit NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service for more information. Day use and camping fees are charged separately, with adult fees from $6 for 'budget' campsites, or $12 for a 'mid-range' site per night. There are also plenty of free camping options available in NSW.

Overnight Parking Banff National ParkThe best overnight parking option in Banff National Park is the overnight parking for Lake Louise. This is a giant overflow lot that allows overnight parking for a small fee, and that runs a shuttle straight to Lake Louise.
RVs up to 12′ in length fit in every national park campground in the United States, although there are a few campgrounds that don't allow RVs at all and are tent only. RVs up to 40′ in length fit in 53% of all national park campgrounds (Remember that many of the parks will only have a few sites this size, however.

Banff has more options for short hikes that get you to scenic views. You have to work a little harder in Jasper, but that doesn't mean it's not worth the effort. Jasper is much less developed and the hiking trails in the wilderness are not as busy, which can be seen as a positive or negative.

In Ontario, there is no law against sleeping in a car, however, your car would have to be parked in some place where overnight parking is allowed. Sleeping in your car in your own driveway is one thing.
1) You MUST crack one of the windows so you can breathe. [Wrong! As long as there is just one person in the car, nothing else using oxygen and the temperature is cool, you can leave the windows completely closed all night.
How to stay comfortable when sleeping in your car
- Keep a blanket and pillow in your boot.
- Make sure your car is locked from the inside.
- Crack open a window to make sure you have decent ventilation.
- Have a bottle of water and some snacks handy. If you're in this for the whole night, you may need refreshments.
Walmart. You may have already heard that it is completely legal to park and sleep overnight in your vehicle at all Walmart parking lots. This has been true in all of our experiences. In fact, we have seen RV's and campervans that are set up permanently at some Walmart locations.
Anything Else?
- Buy a Car Carbon Monoxide Detector.
- Open the windows a Little Bit.
- Don't sleep in the car when drunk.
- Don't sleep in the driver's seat.
- Don't Park in the Same Place For Too Long.
- Don't Stay In Your Car The Whole Day.
- Don't Leave Your Keys In The Ignition.
- Insulate Your Car.
Campsites are not marked, but as long as you're in crown land, it's free and legal.
Here are some things you cannot do in any US National Park.
- Fly an Unmanned Aircraft (Drone)
- Collect Rocks, Plants, Fossils or Antlers.
- Pan for Gold.
- Feed Wild Animals.
- Climb, Walk on or Deface Structures, Rock Formations or Cultural Artifacts.
- Use a Metal Detector.
- Enter Caves Without Permission.
- Release Helium Balloons.
About 89% of Canada is designated as “Crown Land” and available to Canadian residents for public use. (Non-residents can pay for a permit, which varies by province.) While you are allowed to camp for free on Crown Land for up to 21 days, there are many areas where camping is not allowed.
Simply put, the best place for free camping in Canada is British Columbia. This province is home to a network of mostly free Recreational Sites with rustic camping facilities. These 'Rec Sites' are located by water features (lakes, rivers, waterfalls etc) and are usually accessed via unpaved logging roads.
Don't risk it. Next, hotels typically have private parking lots, which means that by parking there, you are on private property. If you are caught trying to sleep there without paying for a room, they could certainly kick you off the lot. If a hotel parking lot feels too risky, go for a truck stop.
Sleeping in your car laws by state
| State | Overnight parking at rest stops |
|---|
| Alaska | Nothing specified |
| Arizona | Allowed, but no camping outside the car |
| Arkansas | Allowed for safety purposes only, no camping |
| California | 8-hour limit at rest stops, no overnight parking or camping |
While it's often fine to sleep in your car, it's a different story if you're over the legal blood alcohol driving limit. You should under no circumstances drive under the influence! However, sleeping in your car while drunk can be interpreted by police as illegal, so do whatever you can to avoid it.
Is it safe to sleep in the car with the engine running? NO, don't do it. If you sleep in the car with the windows closed and the AC on there is a risk of the same air being recycled and/or engine fumes entering the cabin. This is a big risk because carbon monoxide is odorless and can cause death if too much is inhaled.
There's no federal law against living in your car, but states and councils are able to legislate around the issue. In New South Wales, you may sleep in your car as long as you're not breaching any parking laws, which sometimes are in place to prevent people from living in cars for extended periods of time.
