The roots of the Silver Birch will in no way be as vigorous Norma as the roots of the Oak and Willow Trees. The damage to the foundations is caused during very dry summers when the roots are actively looking for water which they will take from the foundations and surrounding soil.
Never top a tree. Remove branches less than two inches (5 cm.) in diameter as close as possible to the collar, or thickened area where the branch attaches to the trunk.

Not to be confused with:Silver birch (Betula pendula) and the two easily hybridise. Silver birch has hairless and warty shoots whereas downy birch shoots are covered in small, downy hairs. The bark of downy birch isn't as white and papery as silver birch.
Most nurserymen will go on to name the second most popular tree as Betula utilis var. jacquemontii, (see above) whose bark is the whitest of all in the Betula genus.
But to summarise the subject of premature yellowing and leaf drop in Silver Birches over the last few years, it can occur for the following reasons: nutrient deficiency. iron deficiency. lack of water and heat stress.
To achieve the feel of a natural copse, plant your birch in close groups, with trees spaced 1-3 metres apart.
Height. One possible reason people plant silver birches in groups of three is to reduce their height. Since the birch roots are both deep and wide-spreading, certain gardeners feel that by planting a cluster of three trees, the roots will have to share a small area and, as a result, may limit the height of the trees.
Birch Tree Growth HabitsThe tree's aggressive roots seek water, prying open cracks or joints in sewer or irrigation systems. Birch roots are among the most aggressive -- and destructive -- tree roots.
Fertilizer. Unless applying a fertilizer to correct nutrient deficiencies in the soil, you can safely apply a low-nitrogen fertilizer, such as an 11-22-22 formula, in early spring or late fall.
Silver birch is fast growing and can reach 20m (65ft) or more on maturity. The branches are notable for their pendulous ends, which give it a gently weeping appearance. The bark is white often with black diamond shaped markings.
And then there's the mess. River birch drops something almost every day, whether it's small twigs, pieces of bark, catkins, or yellowed leaves. The bigger it gets, the more junk it drops, and it never stops -- unless you finally get so teed off you cut the sucker down.
These species are very large trees that generally grow to a height of 40 to 60 feet and width of 30 to 60 feet. They should be planted with the trunk 16 to 31 feet away from a wooden fence.
I'm not sure what kind of birch you have, but river birch are known for dropping branches throughout the growing season. Squirrels often contribute to the shower of small branches throughout the summer as well. If the branches appear to be torn or shredded on the ends, this may be your answer.
The silver birch typically reaches 15 to 25 m (49 to 82 ft) tall (exceptionally up to 31 m (102 ft)), with a slender trunk usually under 40 cm (16 in) diameter.
Hostas are a great ground cover plant for partially shaded areas such as those beneath river birch trees. These plants come in a variety of colors and may grow as small as 3 to 4 inches or as tall as 2 feet. Though they can survive in full sun, hostas prefer some shade and they grow best in slightly moist soil.
Paper BirchThis extremely popular fast growing tree has been known to grow at 1.5 to 2 feet per year.
Watering - Sufficient water is probably the single most important factor in maintaining a healthy birch tree. If rainfall is insufficient, supplemental watering may become necessary.
Although aspen are somewhat similar in appearance to some species of birch, birch trees belong to an entirely different family of trees. Whereas aspen leaves are perfectly flat, birch leaves are slightly "V" shaped and more elongated than Quaking Aspen leaves.
Maybe birches bend simply because they're nonconformist, casual, and resistant to instruction by other trees in how they should take care of their own business. When viewed from that angle, what good Vermonters birches make.
History & Uses of Birch TreesBetula is the Latin name for this hardwood deciduous genus.
While thinking of the best time to trim birch trees, you will realize that sap is found on birch trees during winter and spring. Given this, you should wait until summer and later spring to trim it.
Silver birch is a striking, medium-sized deciduous tree. As the trees mature, the bark develops dark, diamond-shaped fissures. Twigs are smooth, and have small dark warts. Look out for: its bark, which is white, and its triangular-shaped leaves.
When pruning is required, prune only when fully dormant from late summer to before mid-winter. Birches bleed heavily at all other times, particularly in late winter.
Use as a food The young leaves of Silver Birch can be eaten raw or cooked, but have a slightly bitter taste. A flavour enhanced can also be made from dried and powdered leaves. The inner bark (cambium) can also be used as a foodstuff by cooking, drying and grinding into a form of meal.
The process of pleaching silver birch trees is quite a specific skill and it takes time to achieve the signature look of neat square crowns and clear stem below it. Our pleached silver birch trees are sold fully formed and need no additional shaping.
It is true that some of our native trees, like silver birch and holly, are a perfect haven for birds and insects, but plenty of non-native and small-sized trees can also be invaluable for wildlife. If you want to attract birds, bees and butterflies, you would consider some of the trees on this list.

OAS is also associated with an allergy to pollen, especially from silver birch, but also grasses, ragweed (ragwort) and mugwort. 75% of people with silver birch allergy will have OAS. Allergic rhinitis symptoms may flare up when these pollens are in season. OAS can also occur in people allergic to rubber latex.
