Today the Spokane River is mostly a slow-water river. Instead of salmon, it contains carp, bass, bluegills, northern pike, yellow perch and “lots of suckers,†said Scholz.
Areas open for sturgeon fishing include Lake Roosevelt, from Grand Coulee Dam to China Bend boat ramp (including the Spokane River from Highway 25 bridge upstream to 400 feet below Little Falls Dam, Colville River upstream to Meyers Falls and the Kettle River upstream to Barstow Bridge).
Sadly, the Spokane River – our hometown pride – suffers a heavy burden of toxic pollution from more than a century of mining for gold, silver and other valuable metals in the Coeur d'Alene-Spokane River Basin. Most of the mines are closed.
One, Upriver Dam, is owned and operated by the City of Spokane Water Department, and the others are owned by Avista Corp., an electricity and natural gas utility based in Spokane. The dams were built between 1890 and 1922.
Boulder Beach Park: This spot is noteworthy for being almost hidden in plain sight along Upriver Drive in Spokane Valley. You'll find one of the more tranquil spots along the Spokane River at Boulder Beach, and a nice spot for relaxing waterside if you don't want to swim.
Liberty Lake opens for fishing March 1st and is open through October 31st. During the month of March fishing can be outstanding for brown trout. Brown trout are notoriously difficult to catch but just after ice-out there is a window of opportunity to catch them easily at this lake.

Spokane River, river rising in Coeur d'Alene Lake, Kootenai county, northern Idaho, U.S., and flowing west across the Washington border through Spokane for about 50 miles (80 km) to the Columbia River. The Spokane is 100 miles (160 km) long and has several dams, including Long Lake Dam (1915).
East of Spokane, Washington, the ghost of decades-old industrial pollution still haunts the groundwater. But its groundwater, which is filled with PCBs from decades of production, makes the site a major source of contamination in the Spokane River. Today, the company is working to clean up the aquifer it once polluted.
