There are good and bad alcohols. Bad alcohols are methanol, isopropyl alcohol, propanol, benzyl alcohol, and sd alcohol (alcohol denat.) to name a few. They can be extremely drying and irritating to skin, but also may even cause inflammation because they strip the skin off of its natural protection.
For alcohol hand rubs a high alcohol concentration in the range of 60-80% is considered optimal for antimicrobial activity. It was determined that 40% alcohol had some ability to kill oral bacteria with an exposure time of at least one minute.
Specially denatured (SD) alcohol is a mixture of ethanol with a denaturing agent. Ethanol is considered broadly toxic and linked to birth defects following excessive oral ingestion.
Ethanol, also called alcohol, ethyl alcohol and grain alcohol, is a clear, colorless liquid and the principle ingredient in alcoholic beverages like beer, wine or brandy.
Considered halal as “Denatured alcohols lose their quality of intoxicant due to addition of chemicals to ethyl alcohol, so the cosmetic and personal care products containing denatured alcohols can be permitted if all other ingredients in those products are Halal.” They are halal as they are not intoxicating (see here).
Also known as methylated spirits, ethanol has additives,in this case, methanol,to make it poisonous, bad smelling, nauseating, etc. to discourage recreational drinking of ethanol. Methanol is used to make ethanol poisonous. Other additives include pyridine, which too makes it poisonous, and denatonium,to make ethanol bitter.
Denatured alcohol is grain alcohol (ethanol) with added methanol, also known as wood alcohol. It is called denatured because a poison has been added to the drinkable ethanol for tax reasons. Isopropyl alcohol, also known as rubbing alcohol, is not a drinkable alcohol.
SD Alcohol 40B (Specially Denatured Alcohol), which is denatured with tert-Butyl alcohol, is the mostly widely recognized SDA formula worldwide. 40-B has the least amount of denaturants used in comparison to all other SDA formulas. 40-B is denatured with tert-Butyl alcohol or t-Butyl Alcohol.
A specially denatured alcohol (SDA) is one of many types of denatured alcohol specified under the United States Title 27 of the Code of Federal Regulations Section 21.151. Another example is SDA 40-B, which contains tert-butyl alcohol and denatonium benzoate, N.F.
Isopropyl alcohol is readily absorbed through the skin, so spilling large amounts of IPA on the skin may cause accidental poisoning. Small amounts of IPA on the skin is generally not dangerous, but repeated skin exposure can cause itching, redness, rash, drying, and cracking. Prolonged skin contact may cause corrosion.
The bad alcohol in skincare
Alcohols like ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, alcohol denat, and methanol are used to make creams feel lighter, help other ingredients to penetrate your skin, and as a preservative. On the surface that all sounds OK BUT there is a downside. The bottom line
Cetearyl alcohol is used to help soften the skin and hair and to thicken and stabilize cosmetic products, such as lotions and hair products. Not only is it considered safe and nontoxic for use on the skin and hair, but it's also not drying or irritating like other types of alcohol.Rubbing alcohol is an astringent that will remove any trace of dirt when applied after washing your face. No need to scrub and scrub with the soap—just put a dab of rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball and wipe the excess filth away, you dirty animal.
“Alcohol increases the inflammation and changes the hormonal milieu in the skin, which can worsen inflammatory skin conditions, like acne and rosacea,” Dr. “Alcohol alters the blood vessels in the skin, causing them to dilate and worsen the appearance of facial redness.
Stearyl Alcohol is FDA and CIR approved. Safety Measures/Side Effects: The Cosmetics Database finds Stearyl Alcohol to be a low hazard ingredient, despite cancer, irritation, and organ system toxicity concerns and strong evidence that it is a human irritant by the CIR.
Before using rubbing alcohol on your face, make sure that you select an isopropyl alcohol that's no more than 70 percent ethanol. If no side effects are noted, then it's most likely safe to use on your face. To use rubbing alcohol for acne: First, cleanse your face with your normal face wash and pat skin to dry.
Medical Disinfectant
Its status as an anti-bacterial makes denatured alcohol a staple in medical applications where it is used to clean and disinfect hospital surfaces. When used in this way, denatured alcohol prevents bacteria from growing, as well as killing bacteria already present.Panthenol (also called pantothenol) is the alcohol analog of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), and is thus a provitamin of B5. In organisms it is quickly oxidized to pantothenic acid. It is a viscous transparent liquid at room temperature.
Cetyl Alcohol NF. Cetyl Alcohol NF is a, 95% pure and natural, fatty alcohol from Coconut Oil. The fatty alcohols are not at all similar to what you might think of when you think of alcohol, from petro or even the natural distilled grains, which would be drying to the skin.
Can my son get drunk on cetyl alcohol? Yes, as this is a solid form of alcohol and the fumes can indeed cause intoxication and also if ingested. If ingested then other problems can occur.
C20-40 Alcohols is a mixture of synthetic fatty alcohols with 20 to 40 carbons in the alkylchain.
Many Alcohols Won't Cause Dryness
They are used in skincare to help improve stability, adjust skin feel, or added as a moisturizer to body creams and lotions. They're commonly listed on labels as: cetyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, behenyl alcohol, arachidyl alcohol and myristyl alcohol.A fatty alcohol ( meaning it is an alcohol which comes from fat) does not behave like a 'real alcohol' for example ethanol or propanol as it has numerous benefits to skin care products and the skin itself.
Isopropyl Alcohol , also called isopropanol or 2-propanol, is most commonly known as rubbing alcohol. Isopropyl Alcohol is widely used in cosmetics and personal care products, such as aftershave lotions, bath products, eye and other makeup products, as well as nail, hair, and skin care products.
