Once you've got the gear, cross-country skiing is a relatively inexpensive activity. If you keep your gear in good shape, you can use it for a long, long time.

Jasper Shealy, a professor emeritus at the Rochester Institute of Technology who has studied such injuries for 40 years, concluded that while snowboarders were between 50% to 70% more likely to get injured, they are also around a third less likely to be killed on the slopes than skiers.
For the first few days, skiing will seem easier to learn than snowboarding, this is mainly because skiing is more instinctive for beginners than snowboarding. There is no specific amount of time it takes to learn to snowboard or ski but there are some common considerations when learning…
Can a one-year-old really learn how to ski? Yes, but only a little (we've had an 18 month old skiing with us many times – 4 of our kids learned to ski at age 1).
If you're riding is mostly all mountain, powder or freeriding, consider a snowboard on the longer end of the size range or grabbing a volume shifted board. If you are above average weight consider a longer snowboard. If you are a beginner, aim for a shorter board in your size range.
A child can wear skis from the age of 3 upwards…There are even some schools that give private lessons to children from the age of 2 and 3 and a half for group lessons. It depends a lot on the child, what he wants, how active he is and, more specifically his feet which need to be big enough to fit children's ski boots.
Technically a child can begin to ski as soon as they can run and jump (anywhere from 10 months onwards). However, every child develops at their own rate - and someone's two year old can often be the same build as a three or four year old. A broad guideline on when to start them skiing would be 3 to 4 years old.
Goggles are essential to protect your childrens' eyes from the glare of the sun reflecting off the snow and the ultraviolet rays, and to form a snowproof seal around their eyes on snowy days. In bad weather, you need a decent pair of goggles so you can see where you're going!
** If your
child is taller than average for their weight it is acceptable to go up one
ski size.

A child as young as 18 months is old enough to bumble around on flat terrain in ski boots and/or skis. As long as your child is stable enough on his legs, he should be able to handle playing in the snow—and that's the approach most ski schools take to introduce children to the sport.
While these advancements have made snowboarding more accessible for children, it'sdefinitely harder to learn than skiing. Regardless of age, the general rule surrounding skiing and snowboarding is this; Skiing is easier to learn but harder to master, whereas snowboarding is harder to learn but easier to master.
What You Can Do
- Ensure safety.
- Narrate or “sportscast” the situation.
- Offer a “long turn.” In some instances, a child can be given a long turn with a toy.
- Use a timer or clock.
- Reflect the feelings.
- Provide “emotion-coaching.” It's usually the child who is waiting for a turn who is having big feelings.
You might initially think that taking a baby on a skiing holiday is just one of those things that can't be done. No matter what age your children are, you should be able to take your baby with you so that everyone in the family can enjoy the mountains.
